Goodwins Theory of Music Video

Eminem - When I'm Gone

This is a good example of how Goodwin's theory can be used to analyze music videos. He says that a lyrics and music can either illustrate, amplify or contradict the music video.

The first example of illustration is a 1:18, the line is "Literally give a arm for" then Eminem shows his arm which has a tattoo of his daughter Hayley, which signifies how much he would give for his daughter.

From 1.33 the relationship between the daughter and protagonist which is described in the lyrics, is shown in the narrative of the video. It shows how their bond has become stretched due to Hayley's mum being gone (possibly due to rehab) and Eminem having to go on planes to perform to his fans.

1.46 "This song ain't gonna write itself" where there is a close up of the paper where the lyrics literally write themselves, in other words the video contradicts the lyrics. This could signify that he could give up more time to his daughter.

2.49, "She's piling boxes in front of the door trying to block it" the video illustrates the lyrics again where Hayley puts boxes in front of the door, where you can see bright lights coming through the holes and cracks in the box wall that Hayley's made. This shows that the way to the door leads Eminem to his stardom and success but Hayley can't understand why he has to leave.
3.15, "Just as I walk out my bedroom door it turns to stage, they're gone, the spotlight is on", the video once again does exactly what the lyrics says, this signifies that he is on stage pretty much whenever he steps outside the sanctuary of his own house.

4.52, Eminem has just seen his daughter in the crowd and has realized that he is in the wrong. Hayley lip sings along to the lyrics Eminem is rapping to, illustrating that it is Hayley speaking. The line "They're throwing roses at my feet", is shown in the video, which signifies how literal the lyrics are showing his life. Eminem is now wearing just a cap and a jacket, he looks into a mirror and see's himself wearing the suit in the reflection. He punches mirror, shattering it, whilst you hear a gunshot, illustrating that he is leaving the rapping part of his life behind him.

The way that the video here can be analyzed by Goodwin's theory is that the video illustrates pretty much all of the lyrics of the song. It shows how difficult it has become for him to equally share time with his family along with his rapping career.

Album Cover - London Calling

http://www.amiright.com/album-covers/images/album-The-Clash-London-Calling.jpg

This is the album cover for "London Calling", by The Clash. It is regarded as one of the greatest album covers of all time.

The band got there inspiration from Elvis Presley's debut, self titled
album. The Elvis cover has a classic 60's font showing his name. It is
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/51/Elvispresleydebutalbum.jpeg a classic rock and roll picture as he is passionately playing his guitar.
Elvis was all about being a sex symbol for the younger generation
during the 50's and was the classic rock and roll artist, which is all
bring portrayed in this album cover.

The Clash's album cover uses the same font and the same black and white colors, but shows the band member smashing up his guitar in what is described as the classic rock and roll shot, completely losing control of himself. They used the same style of album cover as it shows how much music and genre has changed from each of their times, from Elvis's rock 'n' roll to The Clash bringing in more punk, pop and reggae to the generation. There is more evidence of this within the lyrics of "London Calling". The line "Phony Beatlemania, has bitten the dust" suggests that the good boy days of the Beatles has died out and now new genres have taken over.

Change of Plan!

After looking at our footage for our donkeyboy song, we decided to change our song and idea as our original one we felt didn't have enough narrative to it. We chose Professor Green, "Today I Cried". It was a risk doing a rap song but we have picked some brilliant locations in London and have a great idea for a narrative so hopefully it will be a risk worth taking.

Location - Leake Street, Waterloo

Leake Street is an alley way near Waterloo Station just opposite the London Eye. It is a place where people can graffiti and not get prosecuted for it. It is a place where people can show off their talents through art and it says a lot about culture. Their is a real family atmosphere there, when we went to film our video there we didn't feel threatened or embarrassed by all the people around. It is a well known place for tourists as i counted around 5 or 6 walk through in the 2/3 hours we were filming there.

Iconic Image

Iconic Image, Radio.

We used one similar to the picture provided. We were influenced to have this prop for our music video as we wanted to have a iconic image which would be recognized in the video and be used as the album cover. Examples of iconic images are Calvin Harris's glasses, Eminem's watch, and Cher Lloyed's own radio herself.

Donkeyboy's Record Label

Donkeyboy were signed to Warner Music after a employee came across their Music on MySpace. The Warner Music Group is the third largest business group in the recording industry, along with the Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Warner Music have also signed up artists such as Phil Collins, Oasis, Johnny Cash, Eagles and more modern stars such as Michael Buble, JLS, Flo Rida, Bruno Mars and Nickelback.
In May, 2011, the company announced its sale to Access Industries for $3.3 billion in cash.

Lyric Analysis. Stereolife - Donkeyboy

I got a plan and I'll stay on my own
I got a dream that I should let go                       1.
Waiting for the day to come                              2.

I know, I got a player that is out of control
You gotta stay on my radio                               3.
Waiting for the day to come                              4.

And I know
Spill it on fire and gold
How could I lose control
Cause it's you and I higher than all
Fire is going away
You're a star now stay on your own
I feel you spin my life outa control                  5.

I gotta work it out, take it away
I gotta feel every word you say                       6.
I'm waiting for the day to come

I know, I feel I keep crossing the line
And it feels like a crime zip-line                     7.
Waiting for the day to come

And I know
Spill it on fire and gold
How could I lose control
Cause it's you and I higher than all
Fire is going away
You're a star now stay on your own
I feel you spin my life outa control

And I know...

And I know
Spill it on fire and gold
How could I lose control
Cause it's you and I higher than all
Fire is going away
You're a star now stay on your own
I feel you spin my life outa control

Spill it on fire and gold
How could I lose control
Cause it's you and I higher than all
Fire is going away
You're a star now stay on your own
I feel you spin my life outa control

1. By having a plan and staying on his own then having a dream that he needs to let go, it could mean that he is going to have to go against his dream for the better of himself and for the better of other people around him.

2. Waiting for the day to come, he is perhaps waiting for his big break or waiting for a bug event.

3. A player out of control that needs to stay on his radio, it could signify that he or something close to him is going crazy, a player, perhaps a CD player keeps on skipping or pauses. Maybe a friend keeps on skipping and by needing to stay on his radio, he needs to stay in order and organized.

4. He again says waiting for the day to come, he could be waiting for his favorite song to come up on the radio.

5. The chorus goes on about fire and how its going away, he is a star and needs to be on his own. This could refer back to the first line, he has now made it as a star perhaps because the star's song is now on the radio. He now maybe needs to stay on his own otherwise the "fire will go away".

6. He needs to think every step he takes through.

7. He's on a crime zip-line, this could refer back to when he was on zip lines when he was in the playground, wants to go back to that life perhaps.

Overall the lyrics don't make sense. You could perhaps get out of it that he's a singer living amongst his radio, waiting for his song to come up on the radio along with his fantasies.
